Research Assistant Professor or Research Associate

The Department of Biostatistics and Informatics has an opening for a full-time position at the rank of
research assistant professor or research associate professor. This position will be based primarily at ACCORDS, the Adult and Child
Consortium for Health Outcomes Research and Delivery Science, a program that is jointly funded by the School of Medicine and Children's
Hospital Colorado to support the growth of outcomes and T3-T4 translational research. ACCORDS serves as a center for health care
professionals, researchers and analysts from across the University to pool skills and talents to pursue health outcomes research and
education. In addition, ACCORDS fosters strong research and educational collaborations with external partners including Denver Health,
Kaiser Permanente, the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment and other health care delivery systems and many community
organizations. ACCORDS has programs in Dissemination and Implementation Science, Education, and Community Engagement and Outreach, as well
as Methodological Cores in Qualitative Science, Practice-based Research Networks (PBRNs), Biostatistics for Health Services Research,
Analytic Health Information Technology (HIT) and mobile health.

The position will include opportunities in collaborative research
with health outcomes researchers, original research in health services, and/or biostatistical methodology, along with teaching in the
ACCORDS sponsored fellowships. The ACCORDS Center includes over 70 faculty members based in several academic departments and at affiliated

The faculty member's academic appointment will reside in the Department of Biostatistics and Informatics, one of
five Departments in the Colorado School of Public Health. Faculty and students in the Department of Biostatistics and Informatics apply
analytic methods, statistical reasoning and information management techniques to health data in medical and public health fields.
Professional and research activities include the design and analysis of basic application and translational research and clinical trials,
statistical consulting, development of new statistical methods, disease information services, research databases and more.

This position will report to Dr. Allison Kempe, Director of ACCORDS, regarding
all aspects of the biostatistics job and Dr. Debashis Ghosh regarding academic promotion and personal faculty development.

For candidates at the Assistant Professor level, this position will potentially
have supervisory graduate research assistants seeking MS or responsibilities over early-career research instructors, professional research
assistants, or PhD degrees.

For candidates at the Associate Professor level, this position will be expected to have supervisory
responsibilities over early-career research instructors, professional research assistants, or graduate research assistants seeking MS or PhD

Examples of Work Performed

For candidates at both levels, they will have the
following roles: (1) Teach and mentor Fellows and junior faculty in ACCORD programs; (2) collaborating with researchers; (3) supervising up
to three Masters' level data analysts; (4) participating in the supervision and mentorship of biostatistics and informatics graduate
students when possible.

Expectations at the Assistant Professor Level:

For candidates at the
Assistant Professor rank, the candidate is expected to develop an independent research career which must be highly collaborative and
innovative with a focus on excellence. The research portfolio will involve both collaborative and methodological research. In collaboration
with other investigators the successful candidate will be involved in preparation of grant applications and analysis and publication of data
generated from funded studies.

Expectations at the Associate Professor Level:

Candidates at
the Associate Professor rank are expected to already have an independent research career which must be highly collaborative and innovative
with a focus on excellence.

With respect to the Department of Biostatistics and Informatics, the faculty member will have some
service obligations and might engage in teaching activities as negotiated with the Department Chair.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong knowledge of basic statistical principles relevant in medical research

  • Strong programming skills in a common statistical software package (such as SAS, R, S-Plus, Python, MATLAB and/or SPSS)
  • Good
    organizational skills across individual projects, managing own work load
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Positive attitude and the ability to work with biomedical investigators and colleagues in the DBI, CSPH and more broadly with other
    units on the Anschutz Medical Campus
  • Ability to contribute to the growth and development of the DBI and CSPH
  • Excellent
    problem-solving skills
  • Strong knowledge of statistical computing and/or Bayesian inference

  • PhD degree in statistics, biostatistics, mathematics, computer science, applied mathematics or related
  • Demonstrated potential to establish an independent program of research (for the Assistant Professor rank). An established
    independent research program of research (for the Associate Professor and above rank).
Preferred Requirements
  • 2+ years of research experience at the research assistant professor level, and 6+ years at the research associate
    professor level
  • Expertise in `big data' analysis with primary areas of interest including electronic health records, pragmatic
    trial design including cluster-randomized trials, advanced techniques to approach causal inference and confounding in observational studies,
    and structural equation modeling
  • Evidence of independent research through publications.
  • Demonstrated ability to
    successfully lead the biostatistics elements of clinical or translational research projects.
  • Or equivalent combination of
    education, training, and experience that provides the individual with the required knowledge, skills and abilities
