Job Summary
Under the general direction of the supervisor, plans and oversees the operation of the Head
Start Central Kitchen. Guides and directs the daily work of central kitchen staff. Responsible for the preparation and service of food for
the Child Development and Family Support (CDFS) programs, maintaining proper food storage and sanitary requirements of the kitchen.
Maintains accurate food service records. Provides training and technical assistance to food service aides.

Position Specific Duties

  1. Under the general direction of the Operations Manager, provides direction for
    food preparation and meal service. Directs the daily work of on-site cook, kitchen aides and food delivery driver.
  2. Ensures
    sanitation standards are met and safety practices implemented in accordance with Head Start / Early Head Start and federal, state and local
    guidelines and regulations.
  3. Prepares and serves food for meal service and special events
    With the Operations Manager, orders,
    receives and verifies the accuracy of all food vendor orders and reports discrepancies to the OM for resolution.
  4. Assures that all
    food products are stored and transported in adequate storage facilities at required temperatures.
  5. Completes required paperwork as
    outlined by CDFS, federal, state and local regulations.
  6. Works with the OM to implement menu cycles of nutritional value for meals
    and snacks.
  7. Provides food to meet the special dietary needs of the children served.
  8. With the Operations Manager, supports
    the Harvest for Healthy Kids and other projects that support the program goal of increasing local and healthy foods.
  9. Works with the
    OM to plan meals and foods for extra events.
  10. In the absence of the cook, assumes the cooking duties of that position

General Duties
  1. Reports suspected child abuse in accordance with Oregon Statute and Head Start
  2. Attends training sessions and participates in training opportunities.
  3. Promotes and encourages parent
  4. Maintains the confidentiality of highly sensitive information.
  5. Interacts with children, families and
    community members in a supportive and professional manner.
  6. Works as a team with other staff in providing services to children and
Additional Duties
  1. Provide input into the development of schedules, standards and
    procedures for preparing and delivering meals to sites as required.
  2. Purchases food and supplies for special events and activities,
    as required.
  3. Performs all other duties as assigned.
Examples of Duties:
  • High school diplomas or GED certificate
  • Experience with food preparation in an institutional
  • Experience supervising a nutritional program.
  • Experience working with diverse backgrounds of the College's and
    MHCC Head Start's community, students and employees; demonstrated commitment to promoting access and diversity
  • Current driver's
    license, insurance, and access to a reliable automobile during work hours for purchasing supplies
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds on a
    daily basis
Desired Qualifications
  • Associate's degree or higher in Food Service Management or
    related field
  • Bilingual skills: oral and written fluency in English with fluency also in Spanish, Russian or another language that
    meets community/department's needs
Additional Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in the Oregon Central Background Registry prior to beginning employment and enrollment must be maintained throughout
  • Post-offer fitness for duty evaluation, must be obtained within 30 days of hire date:
    • TB screening

    • Health appraisal
  • Food handler's card
  • Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse & Neglect training must be
    completed within 60 days of hire date
  • Introduction to Child Health and Safety training must be completed within 30 days of hire
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Knowledge of food preparation that meets
    federal, state and local standards and regulations
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of large scale food service management and
    program administration
  • Knowledge of and ability to establish working relationships with staff
  • Ability to carry out oral
    and written directions, read, write and speak at a level sufficient to fulfill the duties to be performed for the position described

  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
  • High performance through creativity, positive spirit, and
  • High personal integrity and sound professional ethics
    Ability to work effectively with diverse internal and
    external stakeholders
  • Computer proficiency (preferably in Microsoft Windows environment)
  • Knowledge of and commitment to
    the use of information technology
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. on a daily basis
