Position Summary

Reporting to the Governing Body and the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is responsible for the organization
and conduct of the Stony Brook University Hospital medical staff; Stony Brook Southampton medical staff.

Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH) is Long Island's premier academic medical center. With 603 beds, SBUH serves as the region's only
tertiary care center and Regional Trauma Center, and is home to the Stony Brook University Heart Institute, Stony Brook University Cancer
Center, Stony Brook Children's Hospital and Stony Brook University Neurosciences Institute. SBUH also encompasses Suffolk County's only
Level 4 Regional Perinatal Center, state-designated AIDS Center, state-designated Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program,
state-designated Burn Center, the Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, and Kidney Transplant Center. It is home of the nation's
first Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis Center.

The CMO is responsible for overseeing the establishment by the medical staff of objective standards of care and conduct to be followed by
all practitioners granted privileges at the hospital. The CMO also oversees the establishment by the medical staff of mechanisms to monitor
performance in the delivery of patient care by practitioners granted privileges at the hospital; and when appropriate, in accordance with
the by-laws, has the authority to limit, suspend or terminate privileges and /or otherwise monitor the conduct of medical staff members.

Duties of the position may include, but not limited to:

  • Provide leadership for and oversight over the medical
    staff office and the credentialing processes for all medical staff members and other licensed independent practitioners.
  • Work with
    clinical chairs to develop relevant metrics for each service line for OPPE.
  • Ensure that the medical staff has written by-laws that
    are periodically reviewed to meet state and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate as a member of Stony Brook University Hospital's
    Senior Executive Group ("SEG").
  • Ensure that the medical staff is accountable to the Governing Body for the quality of care provided
    by medical staff members to patients.
  • Work collaboratively with the utilization management program for the hospital
  • Work
    collaboratively with the senior leadership to develop networks and enhance external physician relations.
  • Appoint and develop
    budgets and goals for and provide oversight to, and evaluation of, medical directors, in collaboration with Chief Executive, CFO, COO and
    Clinical Department Chairs.
  • Oversee hospital supported medical directors, nurse practitioners and physician assistants in
    collaboration with COO, CNO and CFO; assure rational use of these resources
  • Function as a liaison between nursing and medical
    leadership regarding medical staff issues and processes improvement.
  • Work collaboratively with the Chief Quality Officer
    and Chief Regulatory Officer to assure compliance with CMS, DOH and other external regulatory/quality and Joint Commission
    requirements.
  • Serve as a liaison to the School of Medicine Administration with regard to medical staff issues.
  • Lead
    efforts in developing detailed plans, working with medical leadership, COO, CFO and CNO in clinical resource management.
  • Partner
    with COO and CFO and CNO on length of stay (LOS) and through-put management
  • In collaboration with department chairs, provide
    oversight of medical staff including Hospitalists to ensure appropriate LOS, time of day discharge, medical record completion and
    utilization review.
  • Develop and oversee educational programs regarding regulatory, compliance and performance improvement
    initiatives for chiefs of service and the medical staff
  • Other duties as may reasonably be assigned (e.g. clinical network
    development, external physician relations, product review and standardization).
  • Assist the medical staff in establishing
    goals/objectives and mediate conflicts. Assist in ensuring resources and function in ensuring Medical Staff Office role in managing
    appointment and re-appointment process.
  • Participate in medical school/hospital planning as a member of the joint planning
    committee
  • Work collaboratively with DIO and assist with ensuring regulatory requirements of graduate and post-graduate medical
    education programs are met.CMO is a voting member of the Medical Board and Medical Executive Committee
  • CMO is CMO of all of the
    hospital (Article 28) sites, including Stony Brook Southampton
  • CMO is responsible for Department of Risk Management

Required Qualifications: M.D.
with at least ten years post-graduate clinical experience who is eligible and obtains a full time appointment as a faculty member in the
School of Medicine; and who is eligible to be privileged and credentialed as a full and active member of the SBUH medical staff in good
standing. Excellent communication skills and commitment to the provision of the highest quality clinical services. Demonstrated superior
performance in a physician leadership role, ideally in a health system recognized for excellence in clinical care.

Preferred Qualifications: An M.B.A, M.P.H. or equivalent degree. Experience as chief medical officer or medical director
within progressive, complex health care system. Actively involved in the academic environment including physician engagement strategy and
clinical process transformation. In depth knowledge and experience with pragmatic, results achieving use quality metrics requirement and how
the technology can be utilized to monitor and improve the metrics. Ability to meet appointment criteria to a senior faculty rank, Associate
Professor or Professor.

Special Notes: Stony Brook Medicine is a smoke free environment. Smoking is strictly prohibited anywhere on
campus, including parking lots and outdoor areas on the premises. 

All Hospital positions are subject to changes in pass days and shifts as necessary. This position may require the wearing of respiratory
protection, which may prohibit the wearing of facial hair. 

This function/position has been designated as "essential." This means that when the Hospital is faced with an institutional emergency,

operations at Stony Brook Medicine, Stony Brook University Hospital and related facilities.
