Degree and area of specialization
Master's required, PhD or terminal degree preferred, in Urban Planning, Public
Administration, Public Health, Social Work, Engineering or related humanities, social or physical sciences, with focus on local government
or urban areas.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience
Three years' directly related work experience required.

Required skills include:
(1) substantive knowledge of university-community relations and the varied problems and promise of urban
areas and institutions;
(2) excellence in speaking, writing, and other communications;
(3) good interpersonal skills and
professionalism in managing a small staff and maintaining and enlarging a large number of external relations;
(4) grant-writing and
other development skills;
(5) leadership, organizing skill, and passion for the high-road promise of well-organized communities; />(6) an ability to work in and influence heterogeneous and often contentious groups toward productive alignment of their individual
capacities and energies; and
(7) comfort in and even attraction to working in topical and content areas that are new and changing.

Position Summary
The Managing Director of the UniverCity Alliance (UCA) will be take lead operational and management
responsibility for the fiscal and reputational success of UCA, its ingredient UniverCity Year (UCY) program, and its strategic alliances
(e.g., MetroLab). They will report to and be accountable to the UCA Advisory Board, composed of faculty and other leaders in the UW-Madison
community and co-chaired by professors Joel Rogers and Paul Robbins. Their immediate supervisor will be Rogers.

To clarify the subjects of management: UCA's purpose is to improve the visibility and quality of research and teaching of urban affairs
throughout the UW-Madison. UCY, a member of the Educational Partnership for Innovation in Communities Network (EPIC-Network/EPIC-N), engages
students, academic staff, faculty, and administrators at UW-Madison in helping to solve problems and develop opportunities identified by
municipalities, other local government entities, or community organizations. MetroLab is a national network of smart city university-city
collaboration between Universities and their host city for which, at UW-Madison, UCA is responsible for managing.

We expect 40% of time on this job to go to UCY, 40% to go UCA administration and programming, including MetroLab, and 20% to go to overall
program management and development.
