Job Summary

Supports billing
and collections processes by verifying eligibility and benefits, collecting co-pays, obtaining pre-authorizations, and maintaining patient
insurance, billing, and demographic information. May also prepare charges and bills, post payments, and perform follow up on accounts.

Responsibilities

1. Verifies patient
benefits and eligibility for financial assistance.

2. Collects co-pays and deposits, and maintains cash box and log of
payments.

3. Obtains or confirms per-authorization for procedures. Enters or checks patient registration demographics and makes
corrections as needed. Documents insurance coverage and authorization information in patient account notes.

4. Obtains benefit
verification's with insurances, calculates and collects co-insurance amounts.

5. Meets with patient and/or family to explain
insurance coverage, treatment costs, hospital billing policies, and prompt pay or financial hardship discounts.

6. Interviews
patients to determine eligibility for programs, reviews patient financial information, and helps them complete financial disclosure forms if
necessary.

7. In accordance with University of Utah and School of Dentistry policies, makes decision regarding patient
eligibility for financial aid and communicates decision to patients and providers.

8. Maintains understanding of various grant
funding requirements as they pertain to financial support for patients in need.

9. Maintains tracking system of patients eligible
for and supported by School of Dentistry financial aid.

10. In conjunction with University of Utah School of Dentistry
administrative team, develops written materials and policies that support and facilitate patient financial aid.

11. Responds to
incoming calls regarding account status from patients and insurance companies.

12. follows up on unpaid accounts and insurance
company rejections or denials. follow up may include checking claim status with insurance company, correction of bad addresses, etc. />
13. Enters patient charges in computer, posts payments, and/or does billing for clinic.

14. Responds to staff or patient
questions regarding insurance procedures and policies.

15. Carries out special projects as assigned by supervisor.

Solving

The Financial Counselor directly affects clinic profitability, because correct information and proper authorization is
mandatory for successful collections. the incumbent may have the authority to offer prompt payment discounts, determine patient eligibility
for programs or sliding scales, recommend charity adjustments, and obtain authorization for procedures. The incumbent must observe Medicare
standards and CPT and ICD-9 code-book guidelines, maintain patient confidentiality, and
interact professionally with patients and/or patient representatives who may be in sensitive or stressful situations.

Minimum Qualifications

Two years of billing experience (medical setting
preferred) and knowledge of debits and credits, insurance company policies, and medical terminology. MS Word and Excel skills. Strong
customer service, demonstrated human relations skills, and effective communication skills required. Knowledge of coding may be preferred for
some positions.

Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in

Preferences
  • Bilingual in Spanish.
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Prior
    experience in a large, complex medical/dental healthcare system.
  • Knowledge of Medicaid
  • Medical/Dental terminology.

  • Knowledge of coding.
  • Knowledge and prior experience working with major insurance companies.
  • Excellent human relations
    and communication skills with patients from diverse backgrounds.
