General Description: Hatfield is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated intermediate wildlife specialist to participate in project assessment, monitoring, and reclamation programs, primarily in northern Alberta. Main field tasks would include the gathering of wildlife and wildlife habitat baseline data using standard techniques such as point counts, call playbacks, snow-tracking surveys, and aerial reconnaissance species counts and habitat descriptions; pre-disturbance surveys for species and wildlife habitat features of management concern, pre-clearing nesting bird activity surveys, amphibian salvages/breeding wetland surveys, and the monitoring of permanently and seasonally protected habitat features. Office tasks would include data entry/analyses, preparing/contributing to environmental assessments and management plans by reporting on field findings, completing habitat suitability assessments for species at risk, providing wildlife and habitat mitigation recommendations, and potentially completing habitat suitability assessments for species. Technical assistance may be required at times on aquatic-related projects such as fish salvages, fish habitat surveys, and water quality monitoring.

Location: Fort McMurray, British Columbia

Term of Position: Full-time Permanent Employee or Short-term Contract (minimum 6 months).

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Participate in field programs and projects that assess and monitor wildlife populations, wildlife habitats, vegetation, and terrestrial ecosystem conditions.
  • Enter data and assist in analysis and preparation of reports.
  • Comply with Hatfield's Health and Safety Management Plan, the law, and client health and safety protocols.
  • Comply with Hatfield's Quality Management Plan and external requirements and regulations.
  • Conduct other duties as assigned.
  • Auditory and visual bird identification skills (at least two years of experience conducting breeding bird surveys).
  • Other wildlife identification skills (e.g., snow-tracking, amphibian breeding wetland surveys; small mammal identification skills).
  • Basic plant identification skills.
  • Familiarity with data collection and field navigation in remote areas (GPS/tablet use; orienteering).
  • Experience with wildlife permit submissions and putting into practice applicable federal and Alberta laws and regulations.
  • Working knowledge of the AEP and AER project approval process.
  • Ability to work in a team and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Good physical condition (ability to endure long workdays and adverse weather conditions).
  • Resourcefulness; problem-solving skills (recommending solutions for issues that arise).
  • Excellent communication skills including professional engagement with clients.
  • Data entry and reporting skills using MS Office.
Required Education and/or Experience: * An environmental fish and wildlife diploma or a B.Sc. in biological studies, plus at least three years of experience with birding, field work in general, report writing, and environmental consulting.
  • A Driver's license plus some experience driving in rough terrain (i.e., driving a four-wheel drive truck, an ATV or an argo).
  • Experience operating in a dynamic environment that requires flexibility and teamwork
  • An ability/interest to work long days in remote locations.
