Facilities Services supports KU's mission of learning, scholarship, and creative endeavor by operating and
maintaining the University's physical plant and grounds. This is highly skilled plumbing work in both construction and maintenance
activities. Work involves lay outs, fabrication, assembling, installation and maintenance of piping and piping systems, fixtures and
equipment for heating, cooling, hot water, lubricating, sprinkling, and industrial systems, installation and maintenance of gas heating
equipment, drinking fountains, lavatories, commodes, and distilled water stills. Tests plumbing materials and equipment. May act as lead
worker to less skilled maintenance employees. Considerable judgment is required of the incumbent in completion of work. Work is reviewed on
completion for compliance with pre-set specifications, with instructions being general in nature.

Job Description

45% - Follows an established inspection routine in an assigned group of
buildings for needed maintenance and repairs to various mechanical/electrical, plumbing and building structural equipment. Repairs and
replaces drinking fountains, plumbing fixtures, faucets, valves and traps. Diagnoses leaks, stoppages, inadequate supply or faulty operation
of water, sewer, steam, gas and air systems, cleans and repairs defective components. Remounts mirrors, lavatories, towel dispensers and
other restroom fixtures. Performs lubrication, cleaning inspection, changes belts and filters in equipment. Performs repairs on heating,
ventilating and air conditioning units, electric motors, gear reducer, air compressors, various electrical and pneumatic control components,
etc. Performs painting tasks using a variety of application methods and materials involving a very broad variety of surfaces - indoors
and/or outside.

40% - Responds to emergency calls involving loss of utilities or equipment failure. Resets breakers, helps repair
leaks in water or air lines. Repairs are performed as time and expertise permits. May assist Central Shop staff with more complex

10% - Other Related Work as Assigned: Maintains an adequate supply of tools, parts, and supplies for jobs. Responds to
after-hours emergency calls as needed. Assists with other maintenance areas and in other work areas as assigned. Assists with snow removal
and surface treatment.

5% - Performs other related work as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or completion of GED equivalency.
  • Three (3) years of experience as a steamfitter or a related field.
    Associate's degree or vocational school certification may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
  • Must have a valid
    drivers license by time of hire.
  • Position Requirements:
  • Carry up to 20 pounds constantly and up to 50 pounds occasionally
    with or without accommodation.
  • Work under a variety of extremes of temperature and weather, both inside and outdoors.
  • Work
    overtime as needed.
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
  • Report to work during declared periods of inclement
    weather if required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • General knowledge of tools and equipment used in the steam
    fitters trade.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures in working with high-pressure
    steam lines.
  • Experience working in a college or university setting.
