General Summary/Purpose

Participate in the
design of experiments, data analysis, supervision of other laboratory technician(s). Provide training to postdoctoral fellows and other
individuals assigned to the lab.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities

  • Will be responsible for
    supervision of other lab personnel and overall organization of all lab activities. Capable of independent judgment in the selection,
    development, performance and evaluation of research methods; operates appropriate equipment.
  • Will participate in monitoring of lab
    expenditures, assuring compliance with IRB policies, planning and performing experiments that result in publishable data, writing laboratory
    protocols, interpreting test results, and troubleshooting protocols.
  • Must be proficient in PBMC separation from human blood
    samples, cell culture techniques, cell purification and stimulation, flow cytometry (including ability to independently operate BD FacsVerse
    and LSRII), ELISA, protein analysis, real-time RT-PCR, managing mouse colony, mouse dissection and preparation of samples for histologic
    evaluation, and cellular immune assays on murine tissue(s).
  • Uses universal precautions for biohazardous materials to separate and
    aliquot biological samples. Maintain inventory levels and negotiate equipment and supplies from outside vendors. He/She will also play an
    active role in recommendations for hiring, development, retention, and performance appraisals of any research staff hired.

  • Contributes to writing peer-reviewed manuscripts and grants. Applies independent thought to make decisions with PI.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field.
  • Two years
    experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research may
    substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred
Qualifications

  • Ability to work well independently.
  • Direct experience working with mouse colony.

During the Influenza
("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to
patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious
exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in
clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against
Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap
(Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or
antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the
pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own
health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
